Construction Frame is an installation developed from a series of images taken through the structural frameworks of unfinished buildings.
Shot on slide film and projected for the installation, the light shining through the image echoes the landscape captured through the buildings. The slides use the architectural skeletons as a frame for the landscape, imitating the camera’s crop. Repetitive and homogenous, the buildings’ structures begin to reduce into geometric shapes, merging into sculptural metaphysical forms.
Combined in a two-channel projection, the installation of the work compares and contrasts similar images, as the slides flow from one location into another. Central to the work are ideas of stillness and flux. Taken in Calabria, Southern Italy, the series reflects on the contemporary ruins of Western Europe as a permanent and integrated part of the landscape. The buildings lie unoccupied as a consequence of economic standstill. This stillness is developed through the materiality of the work and the emergence of sculptural structures.
Rogers’ work focuses on the deconstruction of architectural interiors. In her images and installations, she captures empty or abandoned spaces, where human life is no longer present. Using a repetition of formal elements, her work creates a feeling of the estranged in the ordinary. The underlying theme of the work is influenced by a wider interest in global forces, particularly economics.
